Readers in Reception - phonics, comprehension and the love of reading - are they all compatible?

The new Ofsted framework places a high focus on reading with phonics being the route to becoming a successful reader

Outline

“A talk-rich, book-based environment is crucial to a child’s development. It supports the ability to understand words, to use imagination and to develop speech. The more that children experience the language-rich environment of quality books and stories, the more they will gain an interest and passion for them” Jo Gray

Description

The new Ofsted framework places a high focus on reading with phonics being the route to becoming a successful reader. Undoubtedly, phonics is a crucial aspect of the Year R daily routine, but how can we simultaneously foster within children and parents, a love for reading. This workshop will explore how we can embed effective phonics and create meaningful opportunities for reading in the environment.

Outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will:
  • Know how to create a reading and talk rich environment
  • Be able to ensure children can apply their phonological skills in your environment
  • Be inspired to engage and stimulate children's reading behaviours positively
